ATTRACTIONS
As Georgia's capital and largest city, Atlanta is a major southern financial and cultural force and the focus of a metropolitan statistical area that covers more than 6,000 square miles and includes more than 110 municipalities. The Georgia Tech campus, located in the progressive Midtown Atlanta, provides the convenience of a big city with an enclosed suburban feel. Some of the city's most popular tourist attractions are located in Tech's walkable attractions loop, including World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium, Inside CNN Studio Tour, the Children's Museum of Atlanta and SkyView Atlanta.
1) The World of Coke (121 Baker St NW)
The World of Coca-Cola is a museum showcasing the history of the Coca-Cola Company that contains a host of entertainment areas and attractions, and is located in Atlanta, Georgia at Pemberton Place.
2) Georgia Aquarium (225 Baker St NW)
Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere, housing thousands of animals and representing several thousand species, all of which reside in 10 million US gallons (38,000 m3) of marine and salt water. It was the largest aquarium in the world from its opening in 2005 until 2012.
3) Stone Mountain Park (1000 Robert E. Lee Blvd)
Stone Mountain is a quartz monzonite dome monadnock and the site of Stone Mountain Park in Stone Mountain, Georgia. At its summit, the elevation is 1,686 feet (514 m) MSL and 825 feet (251 m) above the surrounding area. Stone Mountain is well-known not only for its geology but also for the enormous rock relief on its north face, the largest bas-relief in the world.
4) CNN Center (190 Marietta Street)
The world headquarters of CNN features many of the network’s main newsrooms and studios. Entrance to the building is free, and 50-minute guided tours leave every 10 minutes. Moreover, if you are in the mood for some food or shopping, the public downstairs area has a variety of full-service restaurants and specialty retail stores.
5) Margaret Mitchell House (990 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta)
Visit the house where Margaret Mitchell wrote her Pulitzer-Prize winning novel, Gone with the Wind. The three-story, Tudor Revival house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Learn more about the life of this groundbreaking writer, playwright, and philanthropist at the visitor center inside the building.
6) Fox Theatre (660 Peachtree Street NE)
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Fox Theater has always been a much-loved landmark building. Performances at the Fox include diverse entertainment options such as operas, ballet, rock concerts, and movies, with hundreds of performances each year. In addition to the theatre, there are two ballrooms, the Egyptian Ballroom, and the Grand Salon.
7) Skyview Atlanta (265 Park Ave. W NW)
Atlanta’s SkyView Ferris wheel is located across the street from Centennial Olympic Park and offers breathtaking panoramic views of downtown Atlanta from 42 climate-controlled gondolas.
8) Atlanta History Center (990 Peachtree Street NE)
The Atlanta History Center is a large complex that comprises the Atlanta History Museum, Centennial Olympic Games Museum, Swan House, Smith Family Farm, and the Kenan Research Center, along with a number of historic gardens. The History Museum features changing exhibitions and a permanent collection of topics such as the American Civil War, Folk Art of the South, and various other exhibits related to the history of Atlanta.
9) Centennial Olympic Park (265 Park Ave. W NW)
Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, this is one of the most popular parks in the city due to numerous activities held every year, including festivals, ice skating, and charity events. The park has a mix of man-made and natural beauty, combining water fountains with abundant greenspace. It is conveniently located next to the Georgia Aquarium, CNN Center, and Philips Arena — making it perfect for any trip into the city.
10) Mercedes-Benz Stadium
Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a multi-purpose retractable roof stadium under construction in Atlanta, Georgia that will serve as the home of the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL) and Atlanta United FC of Major League Soccer (MLS). The total cost is estimated at $1.6 billion, Mercedes-Benz Stadium is scheduled to host Super Bowl LIII in 2019. The stadium is scheduled to open on July 30, 2017, with an Atlanta United FC home match against Orlando City SC.
11) Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site (450 Auburn Ave. NE)
Several Atlanta destinations defined Martin Luther King Jr.’s childhood. Visit Martin Luther King’s childhood home, the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he was baptized and the King Center. Stop by any of these landmarks and learn about one of our nation's most influential public figures.
12) Georgia State Capitol (206 Washington Street SW)
Take an in-depth look into Georgia’s history with a walk through the beautiful Capitol building. The building offers guided tours for student and adult groups, but self-guided tours are always available.
